NEOUCOM develops leadership program for high school students

Rootstown, OH - The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) has developed a Student Leadership Program specifically for high school students who plan to graduate in 2011 and are interested in careers in medicine or pharmacy.
The Student Leadership Program is a three day summer residential experience taking place Thursday, August 5 – Saturday, August 7, 2010. The program will provide students with hands on learning opportunities in the medical and pharmacy fields through field trips, medical school simulation equipment and interaction with current NEOUCOM students and faculty. Students will also gain test taking insight and skills by taking a sample ACT test, having it reviewed immediately and then receiving a personal test coaching session from a Kaplan representative.

Participants will reside on the campus of Kent State University during the program, and will be transported to NEOUCOM’s campus by bus. Parents and guardians will be able to join their students for a joint session on Saturday which will include a panel discussion with current students, an information session on application procedures, financial aid information and a luncheon.

Kent Changes Minimum Kindergarten Age

Kent, OH - The Kent Board of Education votes to make a change in the minimum age for new students to enter kindergarten by about 2 months.

Before the vote, students must have been at least 5-years-old by September 30th of their entering year, now they must be at least 5 by August 1st.

Babysitter’s Training Instructor Course Offered April 17, Learn to teach others to be 'Red Cross Ready'

Portage County, OH – The American Red Cross of Portage County will be conducting its Babysitter’s Training Instructor Course on Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 9 am to 5 pm at the Portage Red Cross Office on the Resources on Oakwood Campus (R.O.C.) at 705 Oakwood Street in Ravenna. The cost of the course is $75.

This instructor training provides participants with the fundamentals and knowledge to teach the Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course to youth who are planning to babysit or who need to care for younger siblings. Successful completion of the instructor training certifies participants to teach the course for a two-year period (before re-certification is required) and awards 1.0 CEUs. The training is designed for current Red Cross First Aid instructors.

2010 Census Forms Arrive at Portage County Homes

Portage County, OH - 2010 Census forms have started to arrive at residences throughout Portage County. Although federal law requires that residents fill out and return the form, the Census Bureau estimates that 47.8 million housing units will fail to respond to the census by mail by the April 1 deadline and will require a census taker to make a follow-up visit.

According to polls, the number one reason cited for failing to respond to the Census form is confidentiality. Many residents, along with other confidentiality reasons, do not want to answer any official=looking mail, for fear that it will tip off the IRS, housing authorities, public assistance of their current living situation.

Ohio Executes Cuyahoga Falls Murderer

Lucasville, OH - Lawrence Reynolds Jr., 43, was put to death Tuesday morning for robbing and strangling his Akron-area neighbor to get money to buy alcohol ending the 16 year saga that began on January 11, 1994.

Reynolds was on death after being found guilty of entering the residence of a 67-yesr-old Cuyahoga Falls woman, robbing her, beating her with a wooden tent pole and then strangling her with a rope.

Dennis Kucinich To Announce Health Plan Vote Today

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is expected to announce his vote on health care reform at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 17, in room H-321 of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Many speculate that the congressman will switch his vote to "yes", backing President Obama's reform package.
